RESEARCH INTO THE DESIGN OF RESTRAINT SYSTEMS FOR CHILDREN WITH THE AID OF AN ANIMAL MODEL

RECHERCHE SUR LA CONCEPTION DE SYSTEMES DE RETENTION D'ENFANTS A L'AIDE D'UN MODELE ANIMAL.

THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN INVOLVED IN CAR ACCIDENTS IS CURRENTLY THE OBJECT OF STUDY BY NUMEROUS RESEARCHERS. GIVEN THE VULNERABILITY OF AN UNRESTRAINED CHILD IN A VEHICLE, IT IS ENVISAGED THAT THE RESTRAINT SHOULD BE WITH THE AID OF A SYSTEM WHICH IS DERIVED GENERALLY FROM SYSTEMS OF PROTECTION FOR ADULTS, THE EFFICACY OF WHICH CAN BE VERIFIED. HOWEVER, THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOLERANCE OF A CHILD TO IMPACT, IS AN OBSTACLE TO THE DEFINITION OF CRITERIA FOR THE DESIGN OF SUCH SYSTEMS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTION CRITERIA BY MEANS OF EXPERIMENTS WITH RESTRAINT SYSTEMS USING AS A MODEL A MONKEY CHOSEN BECAUSE OF ITS MASS SIMILAR TO THAT OF A CHILD (FROM 1 TO 3 YEARS). THE AUTHORS HAVE ATTEMPTED TO USE AN ANIMAL WHOSE MASS DISTRIBUTION BETWEEN HEAD AND THORAX WOULD NOT BE TOO DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF A CHILD. WITH THE AID OF THIS MODEL, AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO DETERMINE, ON THE BASIS OF BIOMECHANICAL CRITERIA (CINEMATIC, ACCELERATION AND ZONE OF APPLICATION OF FORCES) THE PROTECTION AFFORDED BY THE DEVICES USED AND MORE PARTICULARLY THE ELEMENTS MOST FAVOURABLE TO BETTER RESTRAINT. FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT OF THE CONFERENCE, SEE IRRD ABSTRACT NO. 101794.
