FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION BY FOREIGN REGISTERED VEHICLES TO HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION IN SWITZERLAND

FINANZIERUNGSBEITRAG DER IM AUSLAND IMMATRIKULIERTEN MOTORFAHRZEUGE AN DEN SCHWEIZERISCHEN STRASSENBAU

THIS ARTICLE DEALS WITH THE QUESTION AS TO THE DEGREE TO WHICH FOREIGN VEHICLES TRAVELLING IN SWITZERLAND HELP TO FINANCE NEW CONSTRUCTION AND ROAD MAINTENANCE THROUGH THE TAX ON FUEL. AFTER A SHORT INTRODUCTION THE AUTHOR LOOKS AT THE BASIC FIGURES USED IN THE CALCULATION. HE ILLUSTRATES THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION OF FOREIGN VEHICLES TO SWISS ROAD CONSTRUCTION MAY BE ASCERTAINED. THE NEXT SECTION IS DEVOTED TO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FUEL PRICES. THERE FOLLOWS THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION: IN 1970 THE GOVERNMENT RECEIVED AT LEAST 222 MILLION FRANCS THANKS TO THE ENTRY OF FOREIGN MOTORISTS. OF THAT, 107.6 MILLION FRANCS WAS EMPLOYED FOR NATIONAL ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND 43.1 MILLION FRANCS FOR REMAINING HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION. ALL OTHER REVENUES (PURCHASE TAX, STATE TAXES, TAX COLLECTION COSTS, COMPULSORY STORAGE DUES AND FUEL DUES) MAKE UP ABOUT 23.9 MILLION FRANCS.
