EFFECT OF LIGHTING COLUMN GEOMETRY ON PSYCHOLOGICAL GLARE

EINFLUSS DER LEUCHTENGEOMETRIE AUF DIE PSYCHOLOGISCHE BLENDUNG

TO EVALUATE PSYCHOLOGICAL GLARE FROM ROAD LIGHTING A METHOD WAS PROPOSED BY THE CIE (COMMISSION INTERNATIONALE DE L'ECLAIRAGE) IN WHICH THE MAGNITUDE OF THE GLARE IS REPRESENTED NUMERICALLY BY A GLARE MARK G. THIS METHOD IS BASED ON EXPERIMENTAL WORK CARRIED OUT IN EINDHOVEN AND KARLSRUHE. MODELS OF ROADS WITH SINGLE ROWS OF LIGHTING COLUMNS WERE USED FOR STUDIES IN THE LABORATORY. OBSERVATIONS OF PRACTICAL INSTALLATIONS ON EXPERIMENTAL ROADS HAVING ROUGHLY THE SAME GEOMETRY SUPPLEMENTED THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE MODEL TESTS AND CONFIRMED THEIR APPLICATION TO PRACTICAL CONDITIONS. WHEN THERE ARE A NUMBER OF ROWS OF COLUMNS, I.E. LIGHTING COLUMNS ON EACH SIDE OF THE ROAD OR FOUR ROWS ON FAST ROADS HAVING TWO SEPARATE CARRIAGEWAYS, DIFFERENCES WERE OBSERVED BETWEEN ACTUAL SENSITIVITY TO GLARE AND THE CALCULATED DEGREE OF GLARE. THE DIFFERENCES ARE PARTICULARLY GREAT WHERE THERE IS A LONGITUDINAL CHAIN OF LIGHTING COLUMNS, SUCH AS IN THE LIGHTING OF MOTORWAYS. IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THESE DIFFERENCES CAUSED BY THE GEOMETRY OF THE ARRANGEMENT, FURTHER EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT. FOR THIS PURPOSE THE MODEL AT THE ILLUMINATION INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KARLSRUHE HAS TO BE MODIFIED. THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES SHOULD MAKE THE GLARE MARK PROCEDURE APPLICABLE IN PRACTICE FOR ALL LIGHTING COLUMN GEOMETRIES.
