MEASUREMENT OF SIDEWAYS FORCES OF LORRY TYRES DURING DYNAMIC FLUCTUATIONS OF WHEEL LOAD, ANGULAR DEVIATION AND LEANING

ROAD SURFACES ARE STRESSED BY VERTICAL FORCES (WHEEL LOADS) AND HORIZONTAL FORCES (CIRCUMFERENTIAL AND SIDEWAYS FORCES). TO DETERMINE THESE FORCES IT IS NECESSARY TO KNOW THE RELATIONS BETWEEN SIDEWAYS FORCE, WHEEL LOAD, RESIDUAL LOAD, RESTORING MOMENT, ANGULAR DEVIATION AND LEANING. THESE ARE KNOWN AND CAN BE MEASURED AS STATIC CHARACTERISTICS. LITTLE IS KNOWN OF THE BEHAVIOUR EVEN OF CAR TYRES IF THERE IS A RAPID MODIFICATION OF ONE OF THE SAID PARAMETERS, AND NO STUDIES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON LORRIES. KNOWLEDGE OF DYNAMIC TYRE CHARACTERISTICS IS HOWEVER ESSENTIAL FOR CALCULATING DYNAMIC PROCESSES ON THE LORRY AND THE ASSOCIATED ROAD STRESS. THESE PROCESSES INCLUDE SIDEWAYS FORCES RESULTING FROM CARRIAGEWAY IRREGULARITIES, DRIVING INTO A BEND, SKIDDING, AND THE CIRCUMFERENTIAL FORCES RESULTING FROM BRAKING AND ACCELERATING ON THE STRAIGHT AND ON BENDS. THE INSTITUTE FOR VEHICLE ENGINEERING AT BRUNSWICK UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY HAS ACQUIRED A DYNAMIC RIG FOR TESTING CAR AND LORRY TYRES, TOGETHER WITH THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR RAPID EVALUATION. THUS IT IS POSSIBLE TO MEASURE THE SIDEWAYS FORCES ON LORRY TYRES GIVEN DYNAMIC FLUCTUATIONS OF WHEEL LOAD, ANGULAR DEVIATION AND LEANING.
