DISPLACEMENTS AROUND TUNNELS IN SOIL

THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES A YEAR OF RESEARCH. THE DATA GIVEN WERE OBTAINED FROM TUNNELS BUILT IN SAND, GRAVEL, STIFF AND COMPRESSIBLE CLAY, FROM IN-SITU OBSERVATIONS AND FROM A MODEL STUDY, AND ARE USED TO DESCRIBE THE CAUSES AND VOLUME OF TERRAIN LOSS ROUND TUNNELS, RELATION BETWEEN VOLUME OF LOSS AND VOLUME OF SURFACE SETTLEMENT, AND THE SHAPE OF SURFACE SETTLEMENT. THE HORIZONTAL DEFORMATIONS OCCURRING WITH SURFACE SETTLEMENT ARE DESCRIBED, AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES FOR DAMAGES TO BUILDINGS ARE OUTLINED. THE VOLUME OF SURFACE SETTLEMENT IS AFFECTED NOT ONLY BY THE VOLUME OF LOST SOIL BUT ALSO BY THE VOLUME OF EXPANSION OR COMPRESSION IN THE SOIL ROUND THE TUNNEL. SURFACE SETTLEMENT CAN BE APPROXIMATELY DETERMINED BY THE RELATION ESTABLISHED BY PECK (1969), EXCEPT IF SETTLEMENT IS VERY SMALL (ELASTIC) OR VERY LARGE (MORE THAN 0,5% OF THE DEPTH OF THE TUNNEL). IN THESE CASES, SETTLEMENT CAN BE MORE OR LESS IMPORTANT THAN ITS ESTIMATION. RESULTS ARE ALSO GIVEN OF IN-SITU AND THEORETICAL STUDIES OF THE INTERFERENCE EFFECTS BETWEEN MULTIPLE TUNNELS. RESULTS OF SETTLEMENT OBSERVATIONS CARRIED OUT IN SOME SECTIONS OF WASHINGTON UNDERGROUND SECTIONS ARE INCLUDED. PART 3 OF THIS REPORT DESCRIBES A MODEL STUDY IN WHICH SOIL MOVEMENTS ROUND A TUNNEL BUILT IN SAND WERE MEASURED BY MEANS OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND STRAIN GAUGES.
