TESTS TO FAILURE WITH INCREASING LOADS OF THE AASHO TEST BRIDGES

THE TESTS OF FAILURE ARE DESCRIBED TEN TEST BRIDGES REMAINING IN OPERATION AT THE END OF REGULAR TESTING ON THE AASHO ROAD TEST. THE BRIDGES FAILED UNDER INCREASINGLY HEAVIER MOVING LOADS. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TEST VEHICLES, TESTING PROCEDURE AND INSTRUMENTATION IS PRESENTED. THE BEHAVIOR DURING THE TEST AND UNDER FAILURE OF A NONCOMPOSITE STEEL BRIDGE, COMPOSITE STEEL BRIDGE, CONCRETE BRIDGE AND A PRETENSIONED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE, POST-TENSIONED PRESTRESSED BRIDGE IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. COMPUTED ULTIMATE MOMENTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE MOMENTS PRODUCED BY THE TEST VEHICLES AND THE DEAD WEIGHT OF THE BRIDGES. /AUTHOR/
