SETTLEMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL PLATES ON FROZEN PLASTIC SOIL

OSADKI OPYTNYKH SHTAMPOV NA PLASTICHNO-MERZLYKH GRUNTAKH

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF LONG-TERM TESTS CARRIED OUT OVER 19 YEARS. THREE PLATES WERE SUBJECTED TO GRADUAL LOADING, THE LOAD REMAINING CONSTANT AFTERWARDS. SIMULTANEOUSLY, LONG-TERM TESTS WERE CONDUCTED IN THE LABORATORY AND IN AN UNDERGROUND CHAMBER UNDER CONDITIONS RESEMBLING THOSE IN-SITU. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE CREEP SETTLEMENT OF FROZEN PLASTIC SOIL FOLLOWS A NON-LINEAR LAW COMPARED TO THE LOAD AND THAT A DECREASE IN THE SOIL TEMPERATURE SLOWS DOWN AN INCREASE IN SETTLEMENT VERY QUICKLY. A MATHEMATICAL FORMULA IS PROPOSED FOR CALCULATING THE EVOLUTION IN THE SETTLEMENT OF FOUNDATIONS AS A FUNCTION OF TIME.
