THE CROSSING OF THE GESVRES MARSH BY THE NORTHERN RING ROAD ROUND THE TOWN OF NANTES

LA TRAVERSEE DU MARAIS DE GESVRES PAR LA ROCADE NORD DE LA VILLE DE NANTES

THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES OF THE TOWN OF NANTES WERE FORCED TO BUILD OVER A VERY SHORT PERIOD (JANUARY 1976 - MARCH 1977) A MOTORWAY SECTION 35M WIDE AND 600M LONG OVER VERY LOW-QUALITY COMPRESSIBLE SOIL: THE GESVRES MARSH. THE TIME ALLOCATED DID NOT SEEM SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW FOR THE CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUE OF PROGRESSIVE SETTLEMENT THROUGH SUCCESSIVE ADDITIONS OF THIN FILL LAYERS. TWO SOLUTIONS WERE PUT FORWARD: (1) CONSTRUCTION OF A VIADUCT, THE FOUNDATIONS OF WHICH WOULD REST ON ROCK: (2) ADDITION TO CONVENTIONAL VERTICAL SAND DRAINS OF VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL GEODRAINS. FOR ECONOMIC REASONS, THE LATTER SOLUTION WAS SELECTED AND THE PROJECT COMPLETED WITHIN THE ALLOCATED TIME.
