NEW TRAFFIC SIGNS IN URBAN AREAS: EXAMPLE - TOULOUSE

NOUVELLE SIGNALISATION DE DIRECTION EN MILIEU URBAIN : EXEMPLE DE L'AGGLOMERATION TOULOUSAINE

FRENCH AUTHORITIES HAVE RELEASED LARGE SUMS IN ORDER TO EFFECT TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF TRAFFIC SIGNS OVER THE NATIONAL TERRITORY, BASED ON NEW REGULATIONS AND EXTENDING OVER SEVERAL YEARS FROM 1978. INITIALLY THIS OPERATION REQUIRES A SERIES OF STUDIES BOTH IN RURAL AND BUILT-UP AREAS IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE SIGNS TO BE INSTALLED. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE NEW TRAFFIC SIGN REGULATIONS APPLYING IN URBAN AREAS AND THE METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDIES TO BE CARRIED OUT, EMPHASISING THEIR INTEREST. IN ORDER TO ILLUSTRATE THESE ABSTRACT THEORIES AND TO SHOW HOW THEY CAN BE APPLIED IN PRACTICE, THE PAPER DESCRIBES A STUDY ALREADY COMPLETED FOR THE TOULOUSE URBAN AREA (40000 INHABITANTS).
