MEASUREMENT OF TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES IN CONCRETE BRIDGES

PREVIOUS STUDIES OF TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES IN THE SUPERSTRUCTURE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGES HAVE BEEN OF A LARGELY THEORETICAL NATURE. IN THIS LONG TERM RESEARCH BOTH SHORT AND LONG TERM TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS ARE PLANNED WHICH SHOULD PROVIDE INFORMATION ON TEMPERATURE STRESSING OF THE BRIDGE SEALING MATERIALS AND BRIDGE DECK DURING THE LAYING OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS, AND ON TEMPERATURE STRESSING OF THE BRIDGE DECK DUE TO THE EFFECT OF WEATHER. THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION (INCLUDING COMPOSITE BRIDGES) ON METEOROLOGICAL TEMPERATURE STRESS OF THE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE AND THE EFFECT OF HEAT OF HYDRATION ARE TO BE EXAMINED BY MEASUREMENTS AT A LATER STAGE.
