PROCEDURE FOR TESTING BRAKING ON BENDS AND DETERMINATION OF SUITABLE EVALUATION CRITERIA

THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS WERE EXAMINED: SIGNIFICANCE OF BRAKING ON A BEND FOR ACCIDENTS; THE RADIUS OF CURVATURE WHICH IS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT FOR ACCIDENTS; SETTING UP AND TESTING OF A PROCEDURE FOR TESTING BRAKING ON BENDS; DETERMINATION OF SUITABLE CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING THIS STATE OF DRIVING. THE PROPOSED PROCEDURE FOR TESTING BRAKING FROM STEADY-STATE DRIVING ON A BEND WITH CONSTANT MOVEMENT OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND VARIABLE DECELERATION WAS WELL-SUITED FOR THE OBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE VEHICLE. WITH THE EVALUATION MAGNITUDES FOUND IT WAS POSSIBLE TO EXCLUDE EXTREME CONDITIONS WHICH WERE PROVED TO BE UNSAFE, EVEN IN THE DRIVERS' ASSESSMENT. TESTS WITH THE VARIOUS DRIVERS ALSO SHOWED THAT A CLOSED LOOP TEST PROCEDURE, IN WHICH ONLY THE RETENTION OF THE REQUIRED COURSE IS EVALUATED, IS UNSUITABLE FOR RECOGNISING UNSAFE HANDLING, SINCE AFTER SOME PRACTICE MOST DRIVERS ARE ABLE TO COMPENSATE UNUSUAL HANDLING BY SUITABLE STEERING MANOEUVRES.
