METHODS AND MODELS FOR THE TREATMENT OF DRUNKEN DRIVERS

METHODEN UND MODELLE DER BEHANDLUNG ALKOHOLAUFFAELLIGER KRAFTFAHRER

THE STUDY WAS PART OF A LARGER PROJECT CONCERNED WITH TESTING THE EFFICIENCY OF VARIOUS MEANS OF REHABILITATING DRUNKEN DRIVERS. THE MAIN OBJECT WAS TO SELECT THE MOST PROMISING METHODS OF TREATMENT FOR USE IN A TWO YEAR TEST PROGRAMME WITH REPEATED OFFENDERS. THESE METHODS WERE DERIVED IN THE FIRST INSTANCE FROM AN ANALYSIS OF THE LITERATURE. IT WAS SHOWN THAT DRUNKEN DRIVERS ARE A VERY HETEROGENEOUS GROUP WHO HAVE DIFFERENT REHABILITATION AND TREATMENT NEEDS. TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF THESE DIFFERENCES SEVERAL FORMS OF TREATMENT HAD TO BE AVAILABLE. THE FINAL VERSION OF THE TEST PROGRAMME COMPRISED (1) A SERIES OF COUNSELS; (2) A SHORT COURSE OF INFORMATION ON GROUP TREATMENT, AS A TYPE OF SCHOOLING; (3) TREATMENT IN SMALL GROUPS, INCLUDING GROUP TRAINING, AND (4) CONTACT FOR HALF THE PARTICIPANTS IN GROUP TRAINING (CHEMOTHERAPY WAS EXCLUDED). TWO TYPES OF TREATMENT WERE DEVELOPED: ONE BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF POWER MOTIVATION TRAINING AND ADLER'S INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGY, AND THE OTHER BASED ON BEHAVIOURAL MODIFICATION. THE RELATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE METHODS WAS COMPARED AND EVALUATED IN THE TEST PROGRAMME.
