USE OF MANGANESE ORE IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN GABON

UTILISATION DU MINERAI DE MANGANESE EN TECHNIQUE ROUTIERE AU GABON

RESEARCH ON THE UTILIZATION OF LOCAL MATERIALS IN AFRICA LED THE FIRM FOUGEROLLE-SOFRATP TO THE USE OF MANGANESE BY-PRODUCTS, WHICH COULD NOT BE EMPLOYED IN INDUSTRY, FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF THE MOANDA ROAD NETWORK. THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL HAD ALREADY BEEN USED FOR PARTIAL REPAIR OF PAVEMENTS AND FOR THE RUNWAY OF MOANDA AIRPORT. IT HAS A LOW SHAPE COEFFICIENT AND HIGH VOIDS CONTENT. IT HAS BEEN UTILIZED IN ROADBASES AND IN SURFACINGS, INCORPORATED IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. THE PROBLEMS ARISING DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS BITUMINOUS CARPET ARE OUTLINED. BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THE MANGANESE BY-PRODUCTS RESULTING IN AN ABNORMAL ADSORPTION, ABSORPTION AND OXIDATION OF BITUMEN, A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE OF BITUMEN HAD TO BE USED AND AN ADDITIONAL LAYER OF BITUMEN-COATED SAND HAD TO BE APPLIED TO REMEDY THE VERY RAPID AGEING OF THE BINDER.
