ROAD NETWORK IN DOUALA

LA VOIRIE DE DOUALA

THE ROAD NETWORK IN DOUALA BECAME COMPLETELY OBSOLETE DUE TO THE INCREASE IN THE POPULATION WHICH QUADRUPLED IN TEN YEARS, HEAVY VEHICLE TRAFFIC AND TRAFFIC GENERATED BY HARBOUR ACTIVITIES. HEAVY RAINFALLS IMPEDED MAINTENANCE. SINCE 1972 A MARKED EFFORT WAS MADE AND 70 KM OF ROADS WERE REPAIRED, MOST OF THE REPAIR WORK BEING CARRIED OUT BY THE FIRM RAZEL. THE MAIN PROBLEMS TO SOLVE WERE THE DRAINAGE OF RAINWATER AND THE WATERPROOFING OF SURFACINGS. LATERITIC DEPOSITS HAVING BEEN COMPLETELY EXPLOITED, CLAYEY SAND AND GRAVEL FROM THE WOURI RIVER WERE USED; THEY WERE STABILIZED WITH CEMENT WHEN DESTINED FOR ROAD BASES AND WITH CRUSHED GNEISS AND BASALT ROCK WHEN UTILIZED IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS WERE ADOPTED DEPENDING ON THE RATE OF DETERIORATION OF THE PAVEMENTS.
