THE OBJECT OF THE WORK IS TO ESTABLISH PRINCIPLES FOR THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE ELEMENTS IN SEGMENTAL CONSTRUCTION UNDER COMBINED TORSIONAL STRESS. IT IS INTENDED TO CARRY OUT AN EXTENSIVE STUDY OF THE LITERATURE ON PREVIOUS WORK AND A PRACTICAL TEST ON A CHECKED, MONOLITHIC PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAM. THE BEAM IS TO BE MADE OF ABOUT 10 SEGMENTS AND ITS SLACK LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT REPLACED BY AN EQUIVALENT PRESTRESSED REINFORCEMENT. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS TO BE PAID TO THE BEARING CAPACITY AND DEFORMATION IN THE AREA OF THE JOINTS, IN ORDER TO CLARIFY THE STRUCTURAL MEASURES NEEDED FOR A PRESTRESSED CONCRETE ELEMENT MADE OF SEGMENTS TO BEHAVE IN A SIMILAR WAY TO A MONOLITHIC ELEMENT UNDER COMBINED TRANSVERSE BENDING AND TORSIONAL STRESS.
