DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF STRAIN AND STRESS IN CONCRETE BRIDGE STRUCTURES

DEVELOPMENT WORK ON THE DESIGN OF ACOUSTIC STRAIN GAUGES IS DESCRIBED, INCLUDING THE INTRODUCTION OF A STAINLESS STEEL BARREL FOR THE R.R.L. BURIED GAUGE. NEW DESIGNS FOR A SURFACE GAUGE AND A LONG. BURIED GAUGE ARE ALSO GIVEN, TOGETHER WITH DETAILS OF RECORDING EQUIPMENT AND CALIBRATION TESTS. SOME NOTES ON THE USE OF ACOUSTIC GAUGES ARE INCLUDED, AND THEIR BEHAVIOR IN FRESH CONCRETE IS DESCRIBED. A COMPARISON OF THE USE OF DEMOUNTABLE GAUGES, SUCH AS THE DEMEC, AND THE ACOUSTIC GAUGE IS PRESENTED. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT, WHILE THE TWO TYPES OF GAGUE GIVE COMPARABLE ACCURACY, ACOUSTIC GAUGES AND THE ASSOCIATED RECORDING EQUIPMENT ARE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE. ON THE OTHER HAND THEY ARE MORE CONVENIENT TO USE BECAUSE OF THE EASE AND RAPIDITY OF REMOTE RECORDING FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF GAUGES. METHODS FOR THE ESTIMATION OF STRESS IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES ARE REVIEWED AND A NEW METHOD BASED ON STRAIN SIMULATION IS PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
