THE RESULTS OBTAINED DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS WITH GRANULATED SLAG USED FOR THE STABILIZATION OF SUBBASES AND ROADBASES, ARE REVIEWED. DEFINITIONS ARE GIVEN OF GRANULATED SLAG, GRAVEL-SLAG AND SAND-SLAG BITUMINOUS MIXTURES AND THEIR RESPECTIVE APPLICATION. RESULTS ARE INCLUDED OF LABORATORY STUDIES CARRIED OUT TO ANALYZE THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE STRENGTH: CURING TIME, PROPORTIONING OF SLAG AND ITS HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES, MINERALOGICAL NATURE AND THICKNESS OF AGGREGATES, QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF THE CATALYZER USED, COMPACTION, WEATHER CONDITIONS, ETC. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED WITH A BLAST-FURNACE FOR IMPROVING GRANULATED SLAG, EMPHASIS BEING LAID ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THE HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES AND THE ALPHA COEFFICIENT (WHICH DEPENDS ON THE BLAINE SPECIFIC SURFACE, FINES AND SLAG), AGGREGATE CRYSTALLIZATION, SETTING OF GRAVEL-SLAG AND THE EFFECT OF THE RATE OF FLOW AND PRESSURE OF THE WATER ON THE HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES. AMONG CURRENT STUDIES ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THOSE OF CRACKING, BENDING AND FATIGUE. COMPARISONS ARE MADE BETWEEN STRUCTURES COMPRISING NON-STABILIZED GRAVEL, GRAVEL-CEMENT AND GRAVEL-SLAG, AND BETWEEN THE GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE INGREDIENTS. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON STORAGE, MIXING, SPREADING AND COMPACTION OF GRAVEL-SLAG. THE CONCLUSION INCLUDES SOME TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE STRENGTHENING OF PAVEMENTS UNDER TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT, SEE IRRD ABSTRACT NO 106958.
