THE AIM OF THIS PAPER IS TO EXPLAIN A NEW METHOD FOR DESIGNING RAILWAY LINES. IN THIS FIRST PART, THE EXISTING METHODOLOGY (CLARK, COTRAM, SCHRAMM, ORE, SNCF, MILOSEVIC, JROMOV) ARE DESCRIBED, ANALYSED AND COMPARED IN ORDER TO ISOLATE THE DIRECTIONS ALONG WHICH RESEARCH SHOULD BE CONDUCTED.
