ALTERNATE THERMAL DRILLING OF FISSURED ROCK

THERMAL DRILLING OF CRACKED ROCK LEADS TO THE FILLING OF BOREHOLES WITH MOLTEN MATTER. THIS CAN BE AVOIDED IF ALTERNATELY HEATING AND COOLING ARE APPLIED. THIS SHOWS TENSILE STRESSES AT THE SURFACE OF ROCK DISCONTINUITIES. A CRITERION OF ALTERNATE THERMAL FAILURE WAS ESTABLISHED WHICH IS BASED ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PREHEATING TEMPERATURE OF THE ROCK AND ITS COOLING TEMPERATURE (COOLING BY MEANS OF A JET OF WATER). THIS CRITERION WAS APPLIED TO THE CALCULATION OF THE RATE OF DRILLING WITH A GIVEN DEVICE AS A FUNCTION OF THE MODULUS OF FISSURATION OF THE ROCK MASS AND RATE OF FLOW OF WATER.
