DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PRINCIPLES OF A DESIGN METHOD FOR TUNNEL SUPPORTS TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE PROXIMITY OF THE FACE WHEN THE SUPPORT IS BEING INSTALLED. FOR A TUNNEL WITH A CIRCULAR SECTION EXCAVATED IN A PERFECT ELASTIC OR ELASTOPLASTIC MEDIUM WITH INITIAL HYDROSTATIC STRESSES, THE POSSIBILITY IS SHOWN OF REDUCING THE PROBLEM TO THAT OF PLANE DEFORMATION BY INTRODUCING A FICTITIOUS INTERNAL PRESSURE WHICH SIMULATES THE SUPPORT EFFECT OF THE FACE.
