THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE LATERAL REACTION MECHANISM IN PILES

ETUDE THEORIQUE DU MECANISME DE REACTION LATERALE DES PIEUX

THIS ARTICLE STUDIES THE LATERAL REACTION OF PILES IN AN ELASTO-PLASTIC MEDIUM. THE PROBLEM IS FIRST INVESTIGATED IN A SOIL-PILE SYSTEM, ASSUMING THE DEFORMATION TO BE PLANE. AN ANALYTICAL SOLUTION IS GIVEN FOR A CIRCULAR DISC MOVING RIGIDLY IN AND STILL ADHERING TO THE ISOTROPIC LINEAR ELASTIC MEDIUM. THE INFLUENCE OF THE SHAPE OF THE PILE SECTION (SQUARE PILE), OF THE DISTURBANCE OF A RING OF SOIL ROUND THE PILE, OF THE PLASTIC YIELD IF THE SOIL UNDER UNDRAINED CONDITIONS (TRESCA CRITERION) IS INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD. IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE VALUE OF THE OUTSIDE RADIUS OF THIS TWO-DIMENSIONAL MODEL, VALUE WHICH MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, THE SIMPLIFIED THREE-DIMENSIONAL PROBLEM OF A VERTICAL AXIS SUBJECTED TO HORIZONTAL LOADING IN AN ELASTIC HALF-SPACE IS EXAMINED USING MINDLIN'S SOLUTION. THE INFLUENCE OF THE RELATIVE RIGIDITY OF THE SOIL-PILE SYSTEM, OF THE LOADING AND HEAD-RESTRAINT CONDITIONS IS THUS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION AND QUANTIFIED BY THE RULES GOVERNING THE DETERMINATION OF THE RADIUS. THE NUMERICAL APPLICATION OF THE RESULTS OF THIS THEORETICAL STUDY TO A CONCRETE CASE IS THEREFORE SIMPLE, AND THE SOLUTION OBTAINED COMPARES FAVOURABLY WITH EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS.
