STABILIZATION OF SAND FOR ROADBASES - APPLICATION OF SAND TO FLY-ASH

TRAITEMENT DES SABLES POUR ASSISES DE CHAUSSEES - APPLICATION DES SABLES AUX CENDRES VOLANTES

SAND STABILIZED WITH ASH-LIME OR CEMENT HAVE A HIGH PERFORMANCE. OBSERVATIONS, CARRIED OUT A FEW YEARS AFTER LAYING ON PAVEMENTS SUPPORTING DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRAFFIC, INCLUDING MOTORWAYS, SHOW THE EXCELLENT BEHAVIOUR OF THE BASES. IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO USE THE ABOVE MIXTURES IN ROADBASES, FURTHER STUDIES MUST BE CONDUCTED, ESPECIALLY STUDIES OF DIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH AND FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR. CRUSHING SAND MUST BE ADDED IN-SITU TO CERTAIN TYPES OF SAND, IF THE IMMEDIATE STABILITY IS TO BE INCREASED; THE ASH ACTS AS A GRADING CORRECTING AGENT ON THE ONE HAND AND AS A BINDER ON THE OTHER BUT DOES NOT GIVE ANY FRICTION BECAUSE OF ITS SHAPE. STABILIZATION WITH FLY-ASH PERMITS THE USE OF SURPLUS SAND IN SIEVING AND CRUSHING PLANTS AND IN NATURAL SAND IN REGIONS LACKING IN GRAVEL. FURTHERMORE THIS USE GETS RID OF THE ASH AND BY-PRODUCTS OF POWER PLANTS. FOR THE COVERING ABSTRACT, SEE IRRD ABSTRACT NO 107014.
