CONTRIBUTION TO THE EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MICRO CRACKING IN ROCKS SUBJECTED TO MECHANICAL AND THERMAL ACTION

CONTRIBUTION A L'ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DE LA MICROFISSURATION DES ROCHES SOUS ACTIONS MECANIQUES ET THERMIQUES

IN THE FIRST PART OF THIS WORK, THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MICRO-DISCONTINUITIES ARE DEFINED WITH RESPECT TO THE CRYSTALLINE CONSTITUENTS OF THE ROCK, AND THE CAUSES OF MICRO-RUPTURES ARE ANALYSED. STUDY METHODS AND LABORATORY TECHNIQUES ARE DESCRIBED (MEASUREMENT OF PERMEABILITY AND POROSITY, ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS). THE SECOND PART DEALS WITH THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE PRINCIPAL TYPES OF ROCK UNDER UNIAXIAL AND TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION. A THRESHOLD MARKING THE BEGINNING OF MICRO-CRACKING IS EVIDENT IN EACH CASE. THE PHENOMENA OF SETTLEMENT, CRUSHING OR EXPANSION WHICH COULD HAVE TAKEN PLACE AT THE INITIATION OF COMPRESSION IN THE MICRO-CRACKED ROCK ARE ANALYSED AND A ROCK CLASSIFICATION IS PROPOSED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BEHAVIOUR UNDER COMPRESSION: (1) HOMOGENEOUS BEHAVIOUR; (2) HETEROGENOUS BEHAVIOUR BY MICRO-FRACTURING; (3) HETEROGENEOUS BEHAVIOUR BY MICRO-CRACKING. THE THIRD PART DEALS WITH THE EFFECTS OF HOMOGENEOUS VARIATIONS IN TEMPERATURE. THE STUDY IS CARRIED OUT WITHOUT EXTERNAL MECHANICAL STRESSES, THEN BY THE APPLICATION OF UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION FOLLOWING THERMAL TREATMENT OR DURING TREATMENT. A THERMAL MICRO-CRACKING THRESHOLD IS EVIDENT. THE APPLICATIONS OF THIS STUDY ARE MANY, ESPECIALLY IN THE FIELDS OF GEOLOGY, GEOTECHNICS AND METALLOGENY. IN THE FIELD OF GEOTECHNICS, THE STUDY OF MICRO-CRACKING MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOUR OF ROCKS SUPPORTING STRUCTURES AND MAY PERHAPS BE APPLIED TO CEMENTS AND CONCRETE USED IN THE STRUCTURES.
