INFLUENCE OF THE QUALITY OF CARRIAGEWAY RUN OFF WATER ON THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT

INFLUENCE DE LA QUALITE DES EAUX DE RUISSELLEMENT DE CHAUSSEES SUR LE MILIEU RECEPTEUR

THE POLLUTING NATURE OF URBAN RAINWATER IS WELL KNOWN. RUN OFF WATER ON HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED MOTORWAYS IS A POLLUTION DANGER FOR BADLY PROTECTED WATER TABLES, AND THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN FULLY STUDIED. THE EXACT KNOWLEDGE OF THE QUALITY OF RUN-OFF WATER AND VARIATIONS IN THIS QUALITY SHOULD LEAD TO THE PROPOSAL OF VARIOUS TREATMENTS AND TESTING OF THE TREATMENTS ADOPTED. MOTORWAY SITES, INSTRUMENTED FOR MEASUREMENT OF FLOW AND POLLUTION, ARE GIVING THEIR FIRST RESULTS. A BIBLIOGRAPHIC SUMMARY ON THE TREATMENT OF RAINWATER IS BEING CONDUCTED. THE FIRST RESULTS ON TREATMENT BY FILTRATION HAVE BEEN OBTAINED. IN 1979 IT IS ENVISAGED: TO MONITOR NEW SITES TO TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS TREATMENT TECHNIQUES AND COMPLETE THE DATA ALREADY OBTAINED ON WATER QUALITY; TO GIVE SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEM OF HYDROCARBONS; TO TRY OUT A NEW APPROACH TO WATER QUALITY BY DIRECT POLLUTION RECOVERY FOR UNIT SURFACE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY; TO STUDY THE OPTIMIZATION OF METHODS OF WASHING AGGREGATES IN QUARRIES; TO START STUDYING THE GRASSING OF MOTORWAY SLOPES BY USING SLUDGE FROM SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS.
