THE OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH IS TO ACQUIRE A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF TYRE/ROAD CONTACT WITH A VIEW TO ESTIMATING THE INFLUENCE OF THE FACTORS MODIFYING THIS CONTACT (WATER, TYRE, SURFACING, SPEED, SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF THE WHEEL, ETC). AT THE PRESENT TIME THERE IS A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE LONGITUDINAL COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF THE SURFACING. IT IS ENVISAGED IN 1979: TO MAKE EVENTUAL MODIFICATIONS TO LPC TRAILERS BY ADDING A DISC BRAKE SYSTEM AND ANTILOCKING DEVICE; TO STUDY SEASONAL VARIATIONS IN ADHESION; TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF THE RATE OF SKIDDING OF THE WHEEL ON THE LONGITUDINAL COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION; TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF TYRE TREAD DEPTH; TO STUDY A NEW EXPERIMENTAL VEHICLE (V.E.R.) TO EVALUATE TOTAL ADHESION.
