THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH IS TO OBTAIN A GREATER KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES AND OF THEIR IMPROVEMENT WITH A VIEW TO PUTTING THEM TO BETTER USE IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION. IN 1979 IT IS ENVISAGED: - TO CONTINUE THE STUDY OF GYRATORY SHEAR COMPACTION COMPARED TO THE MINI-COMPACTOR AND COMPACTION TABLE; - TO COMPLEMENT THE STUDY ON THE TRACKING MACHINE AS REGARDS CREEP CHARACTERISTICS IN UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION; - TO CONTINUE THE STUDY OF TENSILE FATIGUE-BEHAVIOUR CORRELATION; - TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF MIX-DESIGN FORMULAE ON TENSILE BEHAVIOUR AND GYRATORY SHEAR COMPACTION; - TO CONTINUE THE STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF VOIDS MORPHOLOGY AND COMPACTION ON PERMEABILITY; - TO INVESTIGATE A LABORATORY FORECASTING METHOD OF THE GEOMETRIC ROUGHNESS OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES; - TO COMPLETE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY FOR THE STUDY OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES; - TO TEST PROTOTYPE EQUIPMENT: VERTICAL GAMMA BENCH, TENSILE STRESS APPLICATION MACHINE, SYSTEMS OF DATA COLLECTION FOR THE AUTOMATION OF TENSILE TESTS; - TO DEVELOP A PLATE COMPACTION METHOD WITH A GIVEN COMPACTION; - TO CARRY OUT FISSURATION TESTS ON BITUMINOUS MIXTURES.
