THE DURABILITY OF STRUCTURES COMPRISING METAL UNITS IN CONTACT WITH THE SOIL (REINFORCED EARTH REINFORCEMENT, PILES, TIE RODS, ETC.) DEPENDS ON THE UNDERGROUND CORROSION BEHAVIOUR OF THE METAL. THE LIABILITY OF SOIL TO CORROSION OR THE CORROSION STRENGTH OF METAL CAN BE EVALUATED BY ELECTROCHEMICAL TESTS, THE VALIDITY OF WHICH CAN BE VERIFIED BY COMPARISON WITH REAL BEHAVIOUR. IN 1979 IT IS PLANNED: - TO ESTABLISH A CORRELATION BETWEEN LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS AND THE REAL BEHAVIOUR OF BURIED METALS (TIE RODS, HOUSINGS); - TO VISIT STRUCTURES AND CARRY OUT CONTROLS IN THE LABORATORY TO VALIDATE THE CRITERIA SELECTED IN THE REINFORCED EARTH GUIDE; - TO STUDY THE CORROSIVITY OF INDIVIDUAL EMBANKMENTS (SHALE, CHALK, ASH); - TO STUDY INDIVIDUAL PROTECTIVE SYSTEMS BY COATING.
