METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING EMBANKMENTS ON COMPRESSIBLE SOIL

THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO STUDY METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING EMBANKMENTS ON COMPRESSIBLE SOIL, IN PARTICULAR TO ANALYZE AND OBSERVE METHODS OF IMPROVING SUBGRADES. A STATE OF THE ART REPORT OF THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF COMPRESSIBLE CLAY WAS PREPARED BY THE LCPC (BANGKOK SYMPOSIUM). THE EFFICIENCY OF TAMPING WAS INVESTIGATED DURING OBSERVATIONS ON SITES BY REGIONAL LABORATORIES. THE STUDY OF THE EFFICIENCY OF SAND DRAINS IS BEING COMPLETED. THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED ON CONSOLIDATION SITES (VIBRATORY CONSOLIDATION, VIBROFLOTATION, BLASTING) WILL HAVE TO BE CONFIRMED. IN 1979, IT IS ENVISAGED: (1) TO CONTINUE OBSERVATIONS ON TAMPING SITES (EXTENSION OF NICE AIRPORT); (2) TO UNDERTAKE FOLLOW-UP STUDIES OF THE IN-SITU STABILIZATION OF LOOSE SAND BY VIBRO-CONSOLIDATION AND BLASTING VERDON EXPERIMENTAL SITE; (3) TO OBSERVE THE IN-SITU STABILIZATION OF COMPRESSIBLE SOIL BY MEANS OF BALLAST-FILLED COLUMNS (COTEAU SITE).
