THIS RESEARCH IS TWO-FOLD: STUDY OF THE COMPACTION OF ZONES OF DIFFICULT ACCESS AND CONTINUATION OF THE BASIC RESEARCH ON VIBRATORY COMPACTION. (1) COMPACTION IN NON-EASILY ACCESSIBLE ZONES (ABUTMENTS, TRENCHES) IS FREQUENTLY INSUFFICIENT OR BADLY CARRIED OUT, THUS LEADING TO LATER DISORDERS. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THIS TYPE OF WORK MUST BE DEVELOPED. FULL-SCALE TESTS ON THE USE OF SMALL COMPACTION MACHINES ARE BEING CARRIED OUT TOGETHER WITH A PROGRAMME OF OBSERVATIONS IN REAL STRUCTURES. IN 1979, IT IS ENVISAGED TO CONTINUE TESTS AT THE CER AND STUDIES OF INSTRUMENTED STRUCTURES. (2) AS REGARDS BASIC RESEARCH ON VIBRATORY COMPACTION, RELATIONS WERE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE SELECTION OF VIBRATING ROLLER PARAMETERS AND COMPACTION EFFICIENCY FOR A GIVEN CASE OF COMPACTION. RESEARCH IS NOW ORIENTATED TOWARDS VIBRATING ROLLERS, APTITUDE OF SOILS TO COMPACTION, AND USABLE NUMERICAL MODELS. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS (VIBREX) AND A CALCULATION PROGRAM DESCRIBING THE MAIN PARAMETERS OF A ROLLER/SOIL SYSTEM ARE USED IN THE RESEARCH. IT IS ENVISAGED IN 1979: TO INTERPRET THE INFLUENCE OF THE PARAMETERS, NATURE OF MATERIALS, THICKNESS, MOISTURE CONTENT ON THE QUALITY OF COMPACTION; TO INTERPRET THE VIBRATORY BEHAVIOUR OF ROLLERS; TO CHECK NUMERICAL MODELS.
