STATIC DEFLECTIONS IN A LONG-SPAN SUSPENSION BRIDGE WITH CONTINUOUS STIFFENING TRUSS

VERTICAL AND ANGULAR DEFLECTIONS PRODUCED IN A LONG-SPAN SUSPENSION BRIDGE BY STATIC LOADS ARE ANALYSED AS A FUNCTION OF THE TRUSS STIFFNESS, BOTH FOR TWO-HINGED TRUSSES AND FOR CONTINUOUS TRUSSES. ATTENTION IS CALLED TO THE CONSIDERATION OF ANGULAR DEFLECTIONS IN RAILWAY SUSPENSION BRIDGES AND AN EXAMPLE IS PRESENTED OF THESE DEFLECTIONS, IN CONNECTION WITH THE SALAZAR BRIDGE OVER THE TAGUS RIVER, DESIGNED FOR ROAD AND RAILWAY TRAFFIC. INCIDENTALLY, BENDING MOMENTS ARE ALSO COMPUTED AND THE STRUCTURAL EFFECTS OF THE STIFFENING TRUSS IN SUCH A BRIDGE ARE RATHER QUANTIFIED, THUS ALLOWING TO DISCUSS THE ADVANTAGES OF USING A CONTINUOUS TRUSS, OR THE SAME COMBINED WITH A SYSTEM OF OBLIQUE STAYS, IN THAT PARTICULAR CASE. A MATRIX METHOD PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED IS APPLIED TO THE CALCULATIONS, WITH THE CONSIDERATION OF A VERY REDUCED NUMBER OF REDUNDANTS. /RRL/A/
