IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE STRESSED CONDITION OF HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS ON THE BASIS OF THE ELASTIC THEORY, THE ELASTIC CONSTANTS E AND U ARE USED TO CHARACTERISE THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MATERIAL. THIS WORK STUDIES THE QUESTION WHETHER THE CHOICE OF THESE CONSTANTS IS SUFFICIENTLY ACCURATE IN THE CASE OF UNBOUND LAYERS. PLATE BEARING TESTS ARE EVALUATED IN THIS CONNECTION, THESE BEING CARRIED OUT ON THE SURFACES OF FOUNDATIONS WHICH HAD BEEN RE-OPENED AND ON THE INDIVIDUAL LAYERS OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD. THE LOAD-SETTLEMENT CURVES SO CALCULATED ARE RELATED TO A NON-LINEAR ELASTIC MODEL, AND THE FACTORS RELATING TO THE MATERIAL PROPERTIES ARE DERIVED.
