SHORTENING THE CONSTRUCTION TIME FOR STEEL COMPOSITE BRIDGES DEMONSTRATED WITH THE EXAMPLE OF THE COMPOSITE BRIDGE ON THE A61 NEAR ALZEY

IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS STEEL COMPOSITE BRIDGE ON THE FEDERAL MOTORWAY A61 NEAR ALZEY A SHORTER CONSTRUCTION PERIOD, AMOUNTING TO 8.5 MONTHS, WAS ACHIEVED THAN WOULD NORMALLY BE EXPECTED. THREE TENDERS WERE SELECTED FROM 16 TENDERS AND 10 AUXILIARY TENDERS FOR CLOSER STUDY. THE SELECTED DESIGN WITH THE FINAL COST OF 3.2 MILLION DM WAS 1 MILLION DM LOWER THAN THE CLIENT'S DESIGN. THE BRIDGE CONSTRUCTED WAS A THREE SPAN STRUCTURE WITH TWO SEPARATED SUPERSTRUCTURES WITH PIER SPACINGS OF 33.0, 40.6 AND 21.3 M. THE 15 M WIDE COMPOSITE SUPERSTRUCTURE SLABS, 0.40 M THICK, WERE SUPPORTED ON TWO 2.5 M DEEP STEEL GIRDERS. THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS IS DESCRIBED. THE PREREQUISITES FOR THE SHORT CONSTRUCTION TIME WERE: ACCELERATION OF THE STRUCTURAL CALCULATIONS AND THE DRAWING STAGE; THE USE OF COMPUTERS; AVOIDANCE OF LIGHTER STEEL WEIGHTS; INCREASED CALCULATION WORK AND RAPID PROVISION OF MATERIALS; STANDARDIZED DIMENSIONS FOR PLATES; FORMWORK TRANSPORT WAGON INSTEAD OF FALSEWORK.
