CONSTRUCTION OF A ROLLED ASPHALT PAVEMENT 0/18 MM ON THE VIENNESE OUTER PERIPHERAL MOTORWAY

HERSTELLUNG EINER ASPHALTBETONDECKE 0/18 MM AUF DER WIENER AUSSENRING-AUTOBAHN

SINCE 1970 ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN UNDERWAY TO PRODUCE ROLLED ASPHALT PAVEMENTS WITH AS GOOD WEAR AND SKIDDING RESISTANCE BEHAVIOUR AS HARD GUSSASPHALT PAVEMENTS, BY THE CHOICE OF SUITABLE WEAR RESISTANT MIXES. THE PRELIMINARY WORK WAS CARRIED OUT ON THE MOTORWAY TEST STATION AT ST POELTEN. THE RESULTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: USE OF A CHIPPINGS/RICH MINERAL MIXTURE 0/18 MM WITH HARD BITUMEN (VISCOSITY COMPARABLE WITH B 40), GAP GRADING IN THE RANGE 2/5 MM AND DOUBLE BROKEN AND DOUBLE SCREENED CHIPPINGS CONTENT 12/18 MM OVER 15% BY WEIGHT WITH HIGHER WEAR RESISTANCE AND, IN SPITE OF LOWER VOID CONTENT (1.5% BY VOLUME) WITH A HIGHER SKID RESISTANCE AND A HIGHER DEFORMATION RESISTANCE. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE LAYING OF BOTH PAVEMENT SECTIONS (161000 M2 AND 158000 M2), LAYING CONTROLS WITH ISOTOPE DENSITY MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT, MIX STUDIES, MEASUREMENT OF WEAR, SKIDDING RESISTANCE, MEASUREMENT WITH THE SRT AND THE STUTTGART FRICTION METER, AND WITH THE AID OF NUMEROUS TABLES THE RELEVANT COEFFICIENTS ARE PRESENTED. DURING THE FIRST SECTION, BECAUSE OF THE REDUCED INITIAL SKIDDING RESISTANCE RESULTING FROM AN EXCESS OF MORTAR IN THE SURFACE, A SPEED RESTRICTION OF 80 KM/H WAS IMPOSED. IN THE CASE OF THE SECOND SECTION, BECAUSE OF A HIGHER PROPORTION OF 12/18 MM MATERIAL, THIS MEASURE WAS NOT NECESSARY. IN THE CASE OF 0/12 MM, 5 CM THICK PAVEMENT THE COSTS AMOUNTED TO 40 AUSTRIAN SCHILLINGS/M2, WITH CHIPPINGS RICH 0/18 MM, 5 CM THICK PAVEMENT, THEY AMOUNTED TO 50 AUSTRIAN SCHILLINGS/M2, WITH HARD GUSSASPHALT, 3/5 CM THICK THEY AMOUNTED TO 120 AUSTRIAN SCHILLINGS/M2.
