HIGHWAYS WITH A LOW NOISE LEVEL

POSSIBILITIES OF BUILDING HIGHWAYS WITH A LOW NOISE LEVEL ARISE IN THE FIELDS OF TRAFFIC PLANNING (ALIGNMENT), TRAFFIC CONTROL (SPEED LIMITATION), HIGHWAY ENGINEERING (LOW-NOISE SURFACES), AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING (DRIVE-AND-ENGINE NOISE) AND FINALLY IN THE TECHNOLOGY OF NOISE PROTECTION. THE AUTHOR DEALS WITH THE POSSIBILITIES IN THE FIELD OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERING AND THE "PROVISIONAL GUIDELINES FOR ACOUSTIC SCREENING ON HIGHWAYS" PUBLISHED BY THE FG AND THE BAST ON 15.12.1975 (THE HIGHWAY PROTECTION DOCUMENT - VO IS STILL OVERDUE). CONSTRUCTIONAL MEASURES IN THE FIELD OF "HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS" ARE TREATED. THE VALUES QUOTED IN TABLE 5 DEMONSTRATE THAT THE VARIOUS PAVEMENT SURFACES, INCLUDING PAVED SURFACES, HAVE A SPAN OF 7.5 DB(A); THE VALUES REFER TO ROAD SURFACES IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION FROM THE CONSTRUCTION VIEWPOINT. INFERIOR AND CONSTRUCTIONALLY UNSATISFACTORY HIGHWAYS CAN DEVELOP EXTREMELY HIGH NOISE LEVELS. A RELATION EXISTS BETWEEN THE NOISE LEVEL DEVELOPED AND THE RIDE OBTAINED ON THE SURFACE. A SOLID AND DURABLE CONSTRUCTION OF A HIGHWAY PAVEMENT AVOIDS DEFORMATION AND CRUMPLING AND OTHER CAUSES OF UNEVENNESS, WHICH INCREASE THE NOISE LEVEL. A DISCUSSION IS REPORTED ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION, DRAWING ON NUMEROUS LITERATURE SOURCES. IT IS POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE LOW-NOISE HIGHWAYS ECONOMICALLY WITH SUITABLE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND MIXES.
