RSTO 75 CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT FROST BLANKETS. APPLICATION OF THE THEORY ILLUSTRATED BY EXAMPLES

ANWENDUNG DER THEORIE, AUFGEZEIGT ANHAND VON BEISPIELEN (RSTO 75 BAUWEISE OHNE FROSTSCHUTZSCHICHTEN)

BY MEANS OF THE THEORY OF STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN ROAD PAVEMENTS THE EQUIVALENCE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION CAN BE ASSESSED. THE BASIC ASSUMPTION IS THAT SIMPLIFICATIONS AND INACCURACIES IN THE THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS WILL HAVE SIMILAR EFFECTS FOR ALL TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION. ON THE BASIS OF THE CONDITIONS ASSUMED IT WAS FOUND THAT THE CONCRETE PAVEMENTS DESCRIBED IN LINES 1 TO 3 OF RSTO 75 REPRESENT APPROXIMATELY EQUIVALENT CONSTRUCTIONS IN THE VARIOUS CLASSES. FOR THE BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS IN LINE 1 OF RSTO 75 THE INCREASE IN TRAFFIC LOAD FOR THE VARIOUS CLASSES WAS EXAMINED. IT WAS FOUND THAT FOR CLASSES III, IV AND V THE INCREASE IN TRAFFIC CORRESPONDS CLOSELY TO THE INCREASE IN PAVEMENT THICKNESS (4 CM GRID), WHEREAS FOR CLASSES I AND II THERE IS A RELATIVE UNDERESTIMATE OF SERVICE LIFE. DEPENDING ON THE ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING TOTAL PAVEMENT THICKNESS IN RELATION TO THE REQUIRED DEFORMATION MODULUS AT FOUNDATION LEVEL THERE IS UNDERDESIGN FOR CONSTRUCTIONS USING GRAVEL OR CRUSHED STONE BEARING COURSES. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT ANY ASSESSMENT MUST TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE ACCUMULATED EMPIRICAL DATA IN ADDITION TO THE THEORETICAL DESIGN CRITERIA.
