THE JOINT BETWEEN BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACES WITH SURFACE WATER RUN-OFF AND RETAINING WALLS USING AN ASPHALT WEDGE

ROADS IN THE STEEP SECTIONS OF VINEYARDS HAVE TO BE CAPABLE OF PROVIDING ADEQUATE SURFACE WATER RUN-OFF. SUCH ROADS OFTEN RUN CLOSE TO RETAINING WALLS WITH CONCRETE BASES WHICH MUST BE KEPT FREE OF SURFACE WATER. TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEM OF SURFACE WATER FLOW TO DATE BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS HAVE BEEN USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIGH KERBS FIXED TO SUITABLE EDGING SLABS OR CHANNELS. THIS RESULTS IN A STRIP OF NON-UNIFORM WIDTH BETWEEN THE ROAD EDGE AND RETAINING WALL WHICH CANNOT BE MADE USE OF FOR TRAFFIC PURPOSES AND CAN RESULT IN UNWANTED SETTLEMENTS. SUCH DETAILS DEMAND HEAVY LABOUR INPUT AND THEIR CONSEQUENTIAL HIGH COSTS. TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM OF THE WALL TO ROAD SURFACING DETAIL, A WEDGE OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL CAN BE USED WITH ITS SURFACE INCLINED TOWARDS THE ROAD SUCH THAT A CHANNEL IS FORMED WITH THE ROAD SURFACING SLOPING TOWARDS THE WALL. THIS WEDGE IS USUALLY FORMED BY HAND, THE MATERIAL FOR BOTH ROAD SURFACING AND WEDGE BEING BROUGHT AS ONE DELIVERY TO AVOID JOINTS. THE WEDGE AREA IS COMPACTED USING EQUIPMENT HAVING COMPACTING SURFACES WORKING DIRECTLY AGAINST THE WALL. THE CHANNEL IS SUBSEQUENTLY COMPACTED BY A PNEUMATIC-TYRED ROLLER SUCH THAT A LOCAL DEPRESSION REMAINS WHICH PROVIDES THE MEANS FOR SURFACE WATER RUN-OFF AWAY FROM THE WALL. IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE ADVANTAGES PARTICULAR REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE ADDITIONAL WIDTH OF ROAD SURFACE GAINED - 70 TO 80 CENTIMETRES WIDE - WHICH IS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT ON VINEYARD ROADS. THIS SERVES TO CONTROL SURFACE WATER RUN-OFF AND RESULTS IN CONSIDERABLE SAVING IN COSTS.
