ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE USE OF BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

WIRTSCHAFTLICHE ASPEKTE BEI DER ANWENDUNG BITUMINOESER BAUSTOFFE

IN ADDITION TO PRICE LEVELS THE ECONOMICS OF BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS ARE LINKED TO THE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL AVAILABILITY OF THE MATERIALS, TO THEIR SUITABILITY FOR THE CURRENT REQUIREMENTS AND TO THEIR PROVEN LONG TERM VALUE. A FURTHER ROLE IS PLAYED BY THE CONSERVATION OF VALUABLE MATERIALS WHOSE SUPPLY IS FINITE COMPARED TO THE USE OF LESS SUITABLE MATERIALS. THE WIDESPREAD DECENTRALIZATION OF BITUMEN PRODUCTION HAS SO ASSISTED AVAILABILITY THAT BINDER MATERIALS CAN BE QUICKLY TRANSPORTED OVER SHORT HAULS TO THE CUSTOMER. ALTHOUGH THE ENORMOUS INCREASE IN CRUDE OIL PRICES HAS ALSO INFLUENCED THE PRICE OF BITUMEN ITS INCREASE HAS REMAINED LESS THAN THAT OF THE CRUDE OIL. A COMPARISON OF BITUMEN COSTS TO TOTAL COSTS IS FAVOURABLE TOWARDS BITUMEN, SINCE IT ONLY MAKES UP, ON AVERAGE, 20% OF THE COST OF FINISHED MIXES. IN VIEW OF THE PRESENT TENDENCY TO USE UP ENERGY SOURCES FOR POWER PRODUCTION IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT BITUMEN SHOULD BE SEEN AS A GENUINE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND NOT AS AN ENERGY BEARER. IN THE USA ENERGY BALANCE SHEETS FOR VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION METHODS HAVE SHOWN THAT EVEN HOT BITUMINOUS METHODS REQUIRE NO GREATER ENERGY INPUT THAN UNBOUND ROADBASES.
