ON THE USE OF POLYMER-MODIFIED BITUMEN IN ASPHALT MIXES

RELEVANT DETAILS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED FROM THE LITERATURE CONCERNING THE USE OF BITUMEN MODIFIED WITH 2-10% BY WEIGHT (MAINLY 3%) OF THERMOPLASTICS OR ELASTOMERS. THEIR PROPERTIES ARE COMPREHENSIVELY DETAILED TOGETHER WITH INFORMATION ON THE SELECTION, SPECIFICATION AND THE VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES OF USING POLYMERS AS ADDITIVES. VARIATIONS FROM THE USUAL PROCESSING PROPERTIES OF STANDARD BITUMEN ARE PROVIDED IN RELATION TO THE VISCOSITY WHEN PROCESSED, SEPARATION TENDENCIES, AND MIXING CONDITIONS (HIGHER MIXING TEMPERATURE, EXTENSION OF MIXING TIME, RISE OF EQUI VISCOUS TEMPERATURE). FURTHER DESCRIPTIONS ARE GIVEN OF THE LONG TERM STABILITY OF DIFFERENT ELASTOMERS AT NORMAL TEMPERATURES WHEN SUBJECTED TO OXYGEN, ULTRA-VIOLET LIGHT, OZONE, EXPOSURE AND SELECTED TEST PROCEDURES ARE DISCUSSED FOR THE THERMAL AND THERMAL-OXIDIZING CHANGES OF POLYMER-MODIFIED BITUMEN AND ON SEGREGATION-STABILITY AND ON THE PROPORTIONS OF POLYMERS IN BITUMEN. FINALLY INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON CURRENT AND FUTURE APPLICATIONS OF MODIFIED BITUMEN, EG FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF DEFORMATION-RESISTANT ASPHALT SURFACES WHICH ARE, AT THE SAME TIME, FLEXIBLE WHEN COLD.
