CRITICAL GAPS AND SUCCESSIVE HEADWAYS AS A BASIS FOR THE CALCULATION OF EFFICIENCY OF RURAL ROADS

GRENZ- UND FOLGEZEITLUECKEN ALS GRUNDLAGE FUER DIE BERECHNUNG DER LEISTUNGSFAEHIGKEIT VON LANDSTRASSEN

THIS RESEARCH DEALS WITH PROBLEMS OF DEFINITION OF CRITICAL- AND FOLLOWING HEADWAYS AS WELL AS MEASUREMENT INSTRUCTIONS AND EVALUATION. THE EXISTING METHODS WERE FURTHER DEVELOPED AND COMPLETED: THE MOST IMPORTANT SUPPLEMENT IS THE DERIVATION OF A METHOD BY WHICH THE AVERAGE ERROR OF A MEASURED CRITICAL HEADWAY MAY BE CALCULATED. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE WORK CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CRITICAL- AND SUCCESSIVE HEADWAYS FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF VEHICLES AND MOVEMENTS AS WELL AS THE DEPENDENCE OF THESE VALUES UPON EXTERNAL INFLUENCES. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE CRITICAL AND SUCCESSIVE HEADWAYS WHICH ARE VALID FOR THE SINGLE VEHICLE TYPE AND MOVEMENT EVENT AT THE SAME JUNCTION APPROACH MAY BE CONVERTED INTO EACH OTHER BY THE USE OF CONVERSION FACTORS, WHICH WITH GOOD APPROXIMATION MAY BE SEEN AS CONSTANTS FOR ALL JUNCTIONS. OF THE EXTERNAL INFLUENCES INVESTIGATED THE AVERAGE SPEED OF THE MAIN ROAD IS FOUND TO BE THE FACTOR WITH THE STRONGEST INFLUENCE ON THE VALUE OF CRITICAL- AND FOLLOWING HEADWAYS. IN ADDITION THERE IS THE INFLUENCE OF VISIBILITY CONDITIONS AND THE ANGLE AT WHICH THE AXIS OF THE TWO ROADS CROSS EACH OTHER TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT. THESE HAVE LESS EFFECT THAN THE SPEED OF THE MAIN ROAD. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OTHER FACTORS, INSOFAR AS THEY AFFECT THE RESULTS, IS FUNDAMENTALLY LESS; SIGNIFICANT DEPENDENCE CANNOT BE DERIVED FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. ON THE BASIS OF THE ESTABLISHED CONNECTIONS A TABLE OF CRITICAL- AND FOLLOWING HEADWAYS IS INCLUDED WHICH CAN SERVE AS INITIAL VALUES IN THE CALCULATION OF EFFICIENCY OF INTERSECTIONS WITHOUT SIGNAL CONTROL.
