DESIRABLE CONNECTION OF URBAN ROAD NETWORKS WITH MOTORWAYS

DIE ANZUSTREBENDE VERKNUEPFUNG STAEDTISCHER STRASSENNETZE MIT AUTOBAHNEN

IN THE PLANNING OF MOTORWAYS AND THEIR CONNECTING JUNCTIONS DURING THE THIRTIES THE INDIVIDUAL VEHICLE WAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FACTOR. "TRAFFIC STREAMS" EXISTED ONLY AT A FEW PLACES OF THE ROAD NETWORK. THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE AT THE TIME WAS DERIVED FROM CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE. A STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT ON 23 SELECTED JUNCTIONS TO DETERMINE THE CHANGES IN CONSTRUCTIONAL AND TRAFFIC TECHNOLOGY WHICH HAVE OCCURRED SINCE THEN. THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLES AND ARE DISCUSSED IN THE TEXT. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE CONCLUSIONS WERE DERIVED FOR THE JUNCTIONS EXAMINED. THE RESULTS WERE: (A) THE MAJORITY OF THE JUNCTIONS NO LONGER CONFORM TO PRESENT DAY REQUIREMENTS. (B) THE METHOD OF CONNECTION BETWEEN MOTORWAY AND ROAD NETWORK HAS IN MANY CASES LED TO SERIOUS OVERLOADING OF THE ROAD NETWORK. (C) JUNCTIONS, ESPECIALLY IN THE VICINITY OF LARGE CITIES, HAVE STIMULATED INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT. FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT IT CAN BE CONCLUDED THAT: (1) THE LAYOUT OF JUNCTIONS MUST BE GOVERNED BY TRAFFIC STREAMS. (2) THE LOCATION OF JUNCTIONS MUST BE CHOSEN SO AS TO MINIMISE THE EXTRA LOAD ON THE URBAN ROAD NETWORK. (3) A DEVELOPMENT PLAN SHOULD BE WORKED OUT FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF JUNCTIONS AT THE DESIGN STAGE IN COOPERATION BETWEEN THE HIGHWAY AND THE CITY AUTHORITIES. APART FROM THE CURRENT INVESTIGATION THE COLLECTION OF DATA MAY BE UTILISED FOR OTHER RESEARCH.
