THE HEADING DESCRIBED CONSISTED OF A 2600 M LENGTH IN SANDSTONE, SILSTEIN AND MARL OF THE ZURICH MOLASSE. THE INVERT WAS LINED WITH CONCRETE TUBBINGS (LINERS) IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE BORING HEAD. DIRECTLY ABOVE THE ROBBINS MACHINE THERE OPERATED AN AUTOMATIC CONCRETE SPRAYER MADE SPECIALLY FOR THIS PROJECT. IT CONTINUALLY SPRAYED AN OUTER LINING, WHOSE STRENGTH WAS REGULATED ACCORDING TO THE ROCK CONDITION. 76% OF THE DRIVEN LENGTH WAS SECURED WITH ROCK ANCHORS AND WIRE NETTING; AS A RESULT OF THIS FORM OF SECURITY AN AVERAGE DAILY DRIVE OF 8 M WAS ACHIEVED (2 SHIFT OPERATION). THE SITE REQUIRED THE USE OF STEEL LININGS OVER 24% OF THE LENGTH, AND IN THIS CASE THE DAILY DRIVING RATE WAS 3.6 M (2 SHIFT OPERATION). THE PRINCIPAL TECHNICAL DATA OF THE ROBBINS MACHINE IS GIVEN. THERE FOLLOW CERTAIN OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS ON THE CURRENT METHODS OF OPERATING TUNNELLING MACHINES, ALL FROM A PRACTICAL VIEWPOINT. BECAUSE THE SUCCESSFUL OPERATION OF A TUNNELLING MACHINE DEPENDS UPON THE SUITABILITY OF THE MACHINE, CERTAIN CRITERIA ARE STATED WHICH ARE OF USE IN JUDGING SUCH MACHINES.
