NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF THE DENSITY AND THICKNESS OF BITUMINOUS SURFACING - A GROUP ANALYSIS

THE PAPER IS A REPORT ON A RESEARCH PROJECT BASED ON APPROXIMATELY 8000 SEPARATE RESULTS FROM A SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS IN THE LABORATORY AND ON A TEST ROAD. IN A TEST HALL A BTS TYPE 1 AND AN AB 12 WERE CONSTRUCTED BY MACHINE. FOR MEASURING THICKNESS BEFORE LAYING, ALUMINIUM FOIL WAS LAID TO ACT AS AN ANTIPOLE. THE MEANS OF MEASUREMENT WAS A PERMASCOPE. THE ACCURACY ON REPEATED MEASUREMENT WAS 1 MM. DENSITY WAS DETERMINED BY THE TROXLER-ISOTOPE PROBE MODEL 2401. IN THE TEST TWO METHODS OF MEASURING WERE ADOPTED - THE BACK SCATTER METHOD AND THE AIR CRACK METHOD. THE MEASURING POINTS WERE EACH PAINTED THINLY WITH FINE LIMESTONE DUST TO ELIMINATE SURFACE UNEVENNESS. A TEMPLATE WAS USED TO SET OUT THE MEASURING POINTS TO ENABLE COMPARISONS OF MEASURED DATA TO BE MADE. THE DEGREE OF REPETITION OF DENSITY MEASUREMENTS ON FLAT SURFACES OF ASPHALT BY THE BACK SCATTER AND AIR CRACK METHODS WITHOUT LIMESTONE DUST GAVE 0.22 G/CU CM AND FOR UNEVEN SURFACES USING THESE METHODS WITH LIMESTONE DUST 0.023 G/CU CM. THE DEGREE OF PRECISION OF THESE MEASUREMENTS IS IN THE ORDER OF THAT OF CONVENTIONAL METHODS TO DIN 1996. FOR CONVENTIONAL DENSITY MEASUREMENTS 15 CM CORES WERE TAKEN AT EACH MEASURING POINT AND TESTED AT THE TESTING STATION. THE SAMPLES TAKEN DURING CONSTRUCTION OF THE COURSES WERE TESTED BY GROUP ANALYSIS AT EACH TEST ESTABLISHMENT. APART FROM SOME EXCEPTIONS THE TEST RESULTS COMPARED VERY FAVOURABLY AND CONFIRM GENERALLY THE DEGREE OF REPETITION AND COMPARABILITY IN ACCORDANCE WITH DIN 1996.
