INTERACTION BETWEEN ROCK ANCHORS AND ROCK

ON THE BASIS OF THE VARIATION IN THE DESIGN OF THE ANCHORAGE ZONE OF MODERN PERMANENT ROCK ANCHORS THREE DIFFERENT TYPES CAN BE DISTINGUISHED. THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR IN THE ANCHORAGE ZONE OF A ROCK ANCHOR DEPENDS ON THE WAY THE FORCE IS TRANSFERRED. THE INTERACTION OF ROCK AND ANCHOR CAN BE EXPLORED BY MEASUREMENTS WITH TEST ANCHORS. THE RESULTS PROVIDE NOT ONLY INFORMATION ON THE FORCE TRANSFER ALONG THE ANCHORAGE LENGTH, BUT ALSO THE VARIATION IN PARTICIPATION IN LOAD TRANSFER AS THE LOAD IS INCREASED. THUS THE SAFETY OF AN OPTIMALLY DESIGNED ANCHOR CAN BE EXPLAINED AS THE MOBILISATION OF THE BOND STRENGTH IN THAT PART OF THE ANCHORAGE ZONE UTILISED FOR LOAD TRANSFER. MEASUREMENT OF RADIAL PRESSURE IN THE ANCHORAGE ZONE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF ANCHOR PERMITS THE DRAWING OF CONCLUSIONS CONCERNING POSSIBLE CRACK FORMATION. THE NATURE OF LOAD TRANSFER ON THE ONE HAND, AND THE MAGNITUDE OF THE RADIAL PRESSURE IN THE ANCHORAGE ZONE ON THE OTHER HAND ARE EXPLAINED ON THE BASIS OF TEST RESULTS.
