THERMO-MECHANICAL TESTS ON METAMORPHIC ROCKS USING A SHEARING MACHINE

EXPERIENCES THERMOMECANIQUES A LA MACHINE DE CISAILLEMENT SUR ROCHES METAMORPHIQUES

THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PRINCIPLE OF ENERGY STORAGE INTO THE FIELD OF ROCK MECHANICS LEADS TO CLOSER CONSIDERATION OF THE THERMAL SYMPTOMS WHICH ACCOMPANY THE ELEMENTAL AND MECHANICAL TRANSFORMATIONS WITHIN A ROCK MASS OR AT ITS DISCONTINUITIES. THE PAPER DESCRIBES LABORATORY TESTS WHICH WERE CONDUCTED ON SUCH DISCONTINUITIES AND IN WHICH THE HEAT RISE WITHIN A FISSURE WAS MEASURED USING SIMPLE SHEAR TESTS WITH MATERIAL WITH PRE-CUT FISSURES. THE NUMERICAL EVALUATION OF THE HEAT RISE IS GIVEN BY THE TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION EXPECTED USING CERTAIN ASSUMPTIONS CONCERNING LOAD DISTRIBUTION. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE PROBABLE CONTACT AREA IS CONSIDERABLY SMALLER THAN THE AREA CUT ON THE SAMPLE. SUCH A BUILD UP OF STRESS SHOULD LEAD TO A PROOF OF THE VALIDITY OF THE ASSUMPTIONS ON WHICH THE STABILITY CALCULATIONS FOR THE ROCK MASS ARE USUALLY BASED.
