THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TENSILE TEST IN MATERIALS TESTING

ALTHOUGH THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE TENSILE TEST HAVE BEEN KNOWN FOR A LONG TIME, THERE ARE STILL ASPECTS WHICH REPRESENT UNEXPLORED TERRITORY. THIS APPLIES ALSO TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF MATERIALS SUBJECT TO TENSILE STRESSES. THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TENSILE TEST ARE DERIVED AND DISCUSSED. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DEVOTED TO THE INFLUENCE OF LOADING RATE ON THE MATERIAL PARAMETERS. THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TENSILE TEST MACHINES OF CONVENTIONAL CONSTRUCTION WITH MECHANICAL OR HYDRAULIC DRIVE AND THOSE HAVING CONSTANT LOADING OR STRAIN RATES ARE DISCUSSED FROM A DESIGN POINT OF VIEW. EXAMPLES FROM TESTING PRACTICE ARE USED TO DISCUSS THE CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF TENSILE AND UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINES AND TO DESCRIBE THE EQUIPMENT. TYPES DEALT WITH ARE BOTH DOUBLE CHAMBER UNIVERSAL MACHINES OF TRADITIONAL DESIGN AND SINGLE CHAMBER MACHINES. THEY ARE REPRESENTED BY AN ELECTRO-MECHANICAL SPINDLE MACHINE WITH COMPUTER CONTROL OF THE TEST PROCEDURE AND COLLECTION AND PROCESSING OF THE DATA. THE MUTUAL INTERACTION OF TESTING TECHNOLOGY ON THE ONE HAND AND THE DESIGN OF TESTING MACHINES IN RELATION TO THE FIELD OF APPLICATION ON THE OTHER HAND IS ILLUSTRATED BY THE EXAMPLES CITED.
