RESEARCH ON HYBRID PLATE GIRDERS

RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF TESTS ON WELDED PLATE GIRDERS WITH 100,000-PSI YIELD POINT CONSTRUCTIONAL ALLOY STEEL FLANGES AND ASTM A36 CARBON STEEL WEB. FIVE TESTS WERE MADE ON TWO SPECIMENS BY SUBJECTING THEM TO MOMENT AND SHEAR LOADING. THE REPORT DISCUSSES THE DEFLECTION, BUCKLING, AND YIELDING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPECIMENS. RESULTS INDICATE THAT HYBRID GIRDERS OF THE TYPE TESTED CAN FUNCTION SATISFACTORILY UNDER STATIC LOAD WHEN PROPERLY DESIGNED. THESE GIRDERS ARE BEST SUITED FOR LONG SPANS IN WHICH THE RATIO OF LIVE LOAD TO TOTAL LOAD IS SMALL. WHEN THIS RATIO IS LARGE, LIVE LOAD DEFLECTIONS MAY BECOME EXCESSIVE. STRAIN GAGE DATA TAKEN SHOW THAT PLANE SECTIONS BEFORE BENDING REMAIN PLANE EVEN AFTER THE WEB HAS YIELDED CONSIDERABLY. THESE RESULTS AND THE LOAD-DEFLECTION CHARACTERISTICS SHOW THAT ORDINARY BENDING THEORY CAN BE USED IN THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF HYBRID BEAMS AND GIRDERS. /AUTHOR/
