TEST RESULTS AND THEORETICAL MODELS OF THE SHEAR FRACTURE MECHANISM AROUND DEEP-LYING TUNNELS

THE SHEAR FRACTURE MECHANISM DOES NOT ONLY OCCUR IN VARIOUS FORMS, BUT FREQUENTLY IS ONLY A TRANSITIONAL PHASE IN THE COMPLETE FAILURE PROCESS ASSOCIATED WITH A ROCK CAVITY. TAKING ACCOUNT OF THIS STATE OF AFFAIRS, METHODS ARE GIVEN FOR ESTIMATING THE CONVERGENCE AND THE STRESS FIELD, AND THE BASIC FRACTURE MECHANISMS ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF MODEL TESTS. THE SECOND PART DISCUSSES THE INFLUENCE OF SUPPORT METHODS ON THE FAILURE MECHANISM. THE THIRD PART DEALS WITH THE APPLICATION OF THE ANALYTICAL MODELS TO SOLID ROCKS WITH THE AID OF NUMERICAL EXAMPLES. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE HANS-CLOOS CONFERENCE ON GEOMECHANICS, HELD 14TH & 15TH OCTOBER, 1976, IN SALZBURG.
