THE PLASTIC LIMIT STATE OF ROCKS

THE PRESENT PAPER EXAMINES THE PLASTIC LIMIT STATE OF ROCKS. IN THIS CONNECTION IT IS NOTED ON THE ONE HAND THAT CONVECTIVE ENERGY TRANSPORT MAY BE NECESSARY EVEN IN SOLID MATERIALS; ON THE OTHER HAND IT IS EMPHASISED THAT THE PLASTIC LIMIT IS DEPENDENT ON THE RATE OF LOADING. THE INVESTIGATION CONSISTS OF AN ENERGY ANALYSIS, WHICH IS CARRIED OUT ON THE BASIS OF A RHEOLOGICAL MODEL (POYNTING-THOMSON MODEL) WITH THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE TRANSITION TO THE PLASTIC STATE IS CONNECTED WITH A PARTICULAR ENERGY LEVEL. THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS SHOW THAT A PLASTIC LIMIT STATE CONDITION CORRESPONDING TO EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS CAN BE EXPRESSED AS A FUNCTION OF THAT PROPORTION OF THE TOTAL DEFORMATION ENERGY ASSOCIATED WITH DISTORTION. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE HANS-CLOOS CONFERENCE ON GEOMECHANICS HELD 14TH & 15TH OCTOBER, 1976, IN SALZBURG.
