CURRENT CRUSTAL MOVEMENTS IN THE ALPS AND THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FOR ENGINEERING PROJECTS

AKTUELLE KRUSTENBEWEGUNGEN IN DEN ALPEN UND IHRE BEDEUTUNG FUER DAS BAUGESCHEHEN

THE PREVIOUS ASSUMPTION THAT OROGENIC PROCESSES IN THE ALPS AND IN OTHER GEOLOGICALLY AND TECTONICALLY SIMILAR REGIONS COULD NOT BE REGARDED AS EPISODES WHICH HAD LONG SINCE ENDED IS NOW MORE FIRMLY ESTABLISHED BY THE RESULTS OF RECENT RESEARCH. ACTUAL CURRENT TECTONIC MOVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MEASURED IN THE ARLBERG AND UPPER TAUERN REGIONS. AT THE MOMENT INVESTIGATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS ARE IN PROGRESS IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE EASTERN ALPS, FROM WHICH PRELIMINARY RESULTS ARE ALREADY AVAILABLE - FOR EXAMPLE THE NORTHERN LIMIT OF THE TAUERN (FELBERTAUERN, SALZBURG) AND THE HALSTATT/PLASSEN REGION OF THE SALZKAMMERGUT IN UPPER AUSTRIA. IT IS OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE TO CORRELATE BY MEANS OF THE CURRENT RESEARCH THE MEASURED MOVEMENTS WITH THE ALREADY PARTIALLY RECOGNIZED TECTONIC ZONES AND LINES OF ACTIVITY - AN OBJECTIVE WHICH HAS TO SOME LIMITED EXTENT BEEN ATTAINED. THIS RELATION CAN BE OF ENORMOUS SIGNIFICANCE FOR MAJOR ENGINEERING WORKS IN THE ALPINE REGION. IT WILL BE NECESSARY - AS IS ALREADY THE CASE WITH REGARD TO EARTHQUAKES - TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT IN THE APPROPRIATE MANNER THE EVER IMPERCEPTIBLE BUT EVER CONTINUING OROGENIC MOVEMENT WHEN DESIGNING WORKS OF ANY GREAT EXTENT. THIS REQUIRES:- (1) STILL MORE ACCURATE GEOLOGICAL INFORMATION BOTH AT THE PLANNING AND DESIGN STAGES, (2) USE OF LARGE-SCALE TECTONIC DATA IN THE CHOICE OF SITES AND OF CONSTRUCTIONAL METHODS FOR MAJOR PROJECTS, (3) MOST CAREFUL GEOLOGICAL SUPERVISION IN THE COURSE OF CONSTRUCTION, (4) POSSIBLY THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CONSTRUCTIONAL METHODS, (5) GREATER EMPHASIS ON PRECISE MEASUREMENTS TO GAIN INCREASED KNOWLEDGE OF TECTONIC PHENOMENA. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE HANS-CLOOS CONFERENCE ON GEOMECHANICS, HELD 14TH & 15TH OCTOBER, 1976, IN SALZBURG.
