USE OF SLAGS, AGGREGATE CONCRETE, AS A HEAT-INSULATING STABILISED ELEMENT OF THE ROAD STRUCTURE

THE POSSIBILITY OF USING BLAST FURNACE SLAG AGGREGATE FOR FROST BLANKETS IS BEING INVESTIGATED. PRELIMINARY TESTS SHOWED THAT A LEAN CONCRETE PRODUCED FROM SLAG AGGREGATE HAS HIGH EARLY STRENGTH AND GOOD HEAT INSULATING PROPERTIES. A 200 M LONG EXPERIMENTAL SECTION OF ROAD IS BEING CONSTRUCTED, AND IN TWO OF THE SECTIONS A CONTROL PAVEMENT IS BEING INCLUDED FOR COMPARISON WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL ONE. MEASUREMENTS OF HEAT FLOW AND OTHER IMPORTANT PARAMETERS AT VARIOUS DEPTHS SHOULD PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE HEAT INSULATING ACTION OF THE MATERIAL. PERIODIC MEASUREMENTS OF BEARING CAPACITY ARE TO BE MADE AND CORES TAKEN TO ESTABLISH ANY MODIFICATIONS IN THE SLAG AGGREGATE CONCRETE.
